With both sides still appearing committed to reaching a diplomatic resolution, and the White\u00a0House remarking that the ceasefire remained\u00a0intact\u00a0and that negotiations are progressing well, easing upward pressure on crude prices and Treasury yields acted as a tailwind for equities.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, after a strong \u201cpeak week\u201d for earnings last week, another 128 S&amp;P 500 companies offered quarterly results over the last five days. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was among higher-profile highlights,\u00a0as the leading\u00a0competitor\u00a0to NVIDIA (NVDA) gave robust long-term growth forecasts\u00a0driven by artificial intelligence (AI) demand.\u00a0Super Micro Computer (SMCI) was also a standout with its own upbeat AI-fueled guidance.\u00a0On the macro front, improving payrolls data from ADP supported sentiment, while\u00a0a stronger-than-expected Bureau of Labor Statistics payrolls print Friday morning added to risk-on trading and extended weekly gains.<\/p>\n<p><b>International Equities:\u00a0<\/b>The regional STOXX 600 Index edged higher with individual markets trading mostly higher following the long weekend. Earnings were also in focus,\u00a0featuring strong sales results from Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk and German automaker BMW, while London-based lender HSBC dropped on a profit miss driven by higher costs.<\/p>\n<p>Trading across the Asia-Pacific region was\u00a0relatively light\u00a0amid the annual Golden Week holiday.\u00a0South Korea surged over a four-day week as investors digested strong earnings reports from U.S. tech leaders, while the tech-heavy market of Taiwan also gained over a full five-day week.\u00a0Greater China\u00a0posted\u00a0healthy gains\u00a0following the holiday break, supported by\u00a0improving services and stronger holiday travel data,\u00a0hopes government incentives will help spark a recovery in home sales, and reports of DeepSeek fundraising.\u00a0Japan ended higher after playing catch up in just a two-day trading week.<\/p>\n<h2>Fixed Income, Currency, and Commodity Markets<\/h2>\n<p><b>Fixed Income: <\/b>Core bonds, measured by the Bloomberg Aggregate\u00a0Index,\u00a0traded\u00a0higher this week as cooling oil prices relieved upward pressure on Treasury yields.\u00a0If headline noise and choppy oil prices\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0keep bond investors busy enough over the last five days, the Treasury Department quarterly refunding announcement also arrived this week.<\/p>\n<p>The borrowing outlook\u00a0offered by the Treasury was\u00a0broadly steady but\u00a0front\u2011loaded, with borrowing estimates for Q2 2026 and Q3 2026\u00a0that\u00a0were\u00a0in line with expectations,\u00a0while also presenting\u00a0higher projected end\u2011Q3 Treasury General Account (TGA) balances to accommodate larger outflows and increased Treasury rollover risks.\u00a0Issuance\u00a0guidance was unchanged as nominal coupons,\u00a0Treasury\u00a0Inflation-Protected\u00a0Securities, and\u00a0Floating\u00a0Rate\u00a0Notes\u00a0were held flat for another quarter, with Treasury reiterating that current auction sizes are likely to remain in place for at least several more quarters.\u00a0Plus, the combination of higher\u00a0near\u2011term\u00a0borrowing estimates and stable issuance guidance suggests a later start to coupon increases, now expected around May 2027,\u00a0likely concentrated\u00a0in 2-year to 7-year notes and driven by demand conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Among other\u00a0takeaways, the\u00a0Treasury did announce changes to 20-year reopening settlement dates to ease repo specialness, and Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee (TBAC) minutes highlighted ongoing study of investing excess TGA cash in repo markets \u2014 potentially reducing reserve volatility, though implementation appears distant. Bottom\u00a0line,\u00a0Treasury issuance\u00a0remains\u00a0well above pre\u20112020 levels, while the buyer base has shifted away from\u00a0price\u2011insensitive\u00a0anchors (the Fed and foreign central banks) toward more\u00a0price\u2011sensitive\u00a0private investors, potentially needing higher clearing yields as supply grows. Treasury\u2019s messaging reinforces a \u201csteady but heavier\u201d supply regime \u2014 issuance is large, growing more\u00a0front\u2011loaded, and increasingly reliant on\u00a0price\u2011sensitive\u00a0private demand.\u00a0Absent\u00a0a renewed policy buyer or a meaningful deficit inflection, the bias is likely toward higher term premia and episodic volatility in the Treasury market.<\/p>\n<p><b>Commodities and Currencies: <\/b>The broader commodities complex\u00a0reversed early-week strength to trade lower as elevated volatility continued.\u00a0Oil markets remained focused on the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz and brief clashes between U.S. and Iranian forces as\u00a0American military ships helped guide tankers through the critical waterway.\u00a0Despite the skirmishes, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures\u00a0remain\u00a0lower on the week on hopes of a firmer truce to end the conflict\u00a0in the coming weeks, with Washington awaiting a response on its latest proposal. Meanwhile, gold found some traction\u00a0with a weekly advance\u00a0and four straight gains\u00a0as optimism for a ceasefire helped alleviate worries around hotter inflation keeping interest rates elevated.\u00a0Additional\u00a0tailwinds for the yellow metal surrounded central bank buying and China\u2019s central bank reporting its largest monthly purchase in over a year.\u00a0Silver outperformed while copper also posted a solid advance.\u00a0In currencies, the U.S. dollar weakened slightly, but the yen remained in the spotlight\u00a0on signs\u00a0of\u00a0potential\u00a0additional\u00a0intervention overnight Wednesday.<\/p>\n<h2>Economic Weekly Roundup<\/h2>\n<p>Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday morning\u00a0indicated\u00a0U.S. companies added more jobs than expected last month, despite some uncertainty around rising costs\u00a0due to the war in Iran. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 115,000 in April, besting consensus forecasts for\u00a0a second month, to mark the largest two-month increase since 2024.\u00a0Healthcare has been the primary driver of job growth over the last year, and continued to lead hiring again, while\u00a0the\u00a0transportation and warehousing, retail trade, and couriers and messenger services\u00a0sectors\u00a0all delivered multi-year highs in hiring.
